Third Generation Dentist Breaks Away to Successfully Launch State of the Art Practice

In 2005, local dentist John Schinto III made a tough decision to part from his father’s dental practice in Riverside and to open his own office, Schinto Dental. John, a third generation dentist, had worked with his father for over 10 years and desperately wanted to grow professionally. His goal was to offer his clients the very best dental services that the latest technology would allow. “I am so proud to carry on the dental tradition that my grandfather started and my father continued until this year. I love my dad incredibly.” says John. “At the time though, I was limited by the physical constraints of my dad’s office to offer my patients the benefits of today’s newest equipment. My father was not ready to retire yet and he did not want to invest in major improvements to the office towards the end of his career. Instead, I took a giant leap and decided to open my own separate practice.”

With the assistance of his wife, Elizabeth, John took out a loan and constructed a state of the art dental office in a building on the Greenwich/Stamford boarder across from Ethan Allen. Schinto Dental opened in July 2005 offering cosmetic and family dentistry and the practice continues to flourish each year. Today, the 2,000 square foot office is complete with brand new equipment, four dental operatories, a digital x-ray processing center, a sterilization center, John’s private office, a consulting room, a staff room, and a very spacious and comfortable waiting room. Among the staff, some of whom have been associated with the Schinto dental practice for over twenty years and three generations, is an office manager, two front desk scheduling coordinators, an insurance and finance coordinator, three hygienists, a dental assistant, and Dr. Schinto who personally sees each of his patients at every visit. Schinto Dental provides a wide range of services including bonding, veneers, crowns, whitening, and pediatrics. The office also offers digital radiography which reduces x-ray radiation by 85% and dental implants which replace missing teeth or groups of teeth instead of using bridges or dentures. John has been hard at work learning the latest advances in dentistry. He recently completed his certification for dental conscious sedation to help patients who have high dental anxiety. Two new products that the office offers are Invisalign and Lumineers. These products have allowed John to treat patients in a way that is quick and comfortable and giving patients the smile they have always wanted. Schinto Dental also offers in-office Zoom whitening procedure which can whiten your teeth in a little over one hour. Products and techniques like these have made dentistry fun, easy, and comfortable for both the patient and the practitioner.

Accommodating patients is among the top priorities of John’s new office. In addition to electronic insurance processing, a website complete with secure patient account accessibility, and emailed appointment reminders, John also offers convenient evening hours for patients with busy daytime schedules. “I have a passion for dentistry,” John states, “but what truly makes my job special is the friendships that I have made with my patients. Many of them are like a part of my family. It was extremely important for me when designing my practice to not only be a skilled dentist utilizing the most up to date practices, but to build long term relationships and to create a personalized service that was centered around my patient’s needs.”

John’s grandfather, John J. Schinto, Sr., passed away in February of 2007 at the age of 102. John Sr. first established the Schinto dental practice in Greenwich in 1930 at 45 East Putnam Avenue and worked for over 45 years serving the community. His life was always active participating in dental affairs ranging from pioneering the development of the Greenwich Hospital dental clinic to establishing the Greenwich Dental Society. John’s father, John J. Schinto, Jr., known by most as “Jack”, began practicing in 1970 with his father and then in 1984, Jack moved the practice from its original location to 19 Riverside Avenue where he practiced for over twenty years. Jack retired this year selling his practice to Michael Levin, DDS. Today, John J. Schinto, III is the only Schinto still in practice.

John III grew up in Greenwich and currently lives in Riverside with Elizabeth and their three children. John has high hopes that his eldest son, John J. Schinto, IV, will carry on this multi generational Schinto dental practice. John obtained his Bachelors degree from the University of Richmond in Virginia where he met Elizabeth. He obtained his Doctor of Dental Surgery from the Medical College of Virginia where he graduated with honors. In 1995, he proudly received the American College of Dentists Award for Excellence. In addition to working at his new practice, John has been a staff member at Greenwich Hospital and volunteers his dental services in the out-patient clinic. In his free time, John enjoys sailing, fishing, skiing, and being with his family. “It was not easy breaking away from my dad’s business a few year’s ago, but it was best for both of us. I am very proud of the new business that I have created and of my family’s legacy in this career. I certainly know that my grandfather was proud of my father and me as he often said.”

John Schinto, III would have never guessed that his practice would be where it is today, but he is quite pleased with what he has built in just a few short years. He is passionate about dentistry and is committed to providing superior care to his patients. “According to my Grandfather,” John says, “If you love what you are doing, you will be successful.” Perhaps the real secret of success for John and Schinto Dental was being ready for opportunity and then working hard to make it happen.
